North Mississippi Osborne: Ardmore Music Hall, Ardmore, Pennsylvania
A collaboration of North Mississippi Allstars, Anders Osborne and the Holy Funky Spirit.
I am still sorting through the after-effects of having experienced live the music of “North Mississippi Osborne” the evening of Feb. 28, 2015 at the Ardmore Music Hall in Ardmore, PA. Mind you the sheer fact that this concert is lingering within my head days after it all went down is an amazing feat in of itself. This venue seemed to be just the perfect size for this band; the show itself was close to a 3 hour show with no intermission at all. The sold-out crowd was more than ready for N.M.O by the time the first note was played.
North Mississippi Allstars (brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson and Lightnin’ Malcom) bring a plethora of rootsy high-energy numbers to this project. “North Mississippi Allstars formed in 1996; the product of a special time for modern Mississippi country blues. Brothers Luther and Cody Dickinson soaked up the music of their father, Memphis legend Jim Dickinson, and absorbed the North Mississippi legacy while playing and shaking it down in the juke joints with their blues ancestors. R.L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough, Otha Turner and their musical families were at their peak, making classic records and touring the world. Eventually, Luther (guitar, vocals) and Cody (drums, vocals) formed the North Mississippi Allstars and pioneered their own brand of blues-infused rock and roll.”
Swedish born Anders Osborne ran away from home at 16 and eventually settled down in New Orleans where he has called home since 1985. “Between the potency of his richly detailed songwriting, his intensely emotional, soulful vocals and his piercing, expert guitar work, New Orleans’ Anders Osborne is a true musical treasure. He is among the most original and visionary musicians writing and performing today. Guitar Player calls him ‘the poet laureate of Louisiana’s fertile roots music scene.’ New Orleans’ Gambit Weekly recently honored Osborne as the Entertainer of the Year. OffBeat named him the Crescent City’s Best Guitarist for the third year in a row, and the Best Songwriter for the second straight year. Osborne also won Song of the Year for his composition, Louisiana Gold.”
Teaming up together has been something they’ve been talking about doing for quite some time but with each band’s hectic schedule it just didn’t seem like it could jive up…until now.

I have seen N.M.A. on one than one occasion and thought that I could be prepared for what I was about to witness that cold winter night in Ardmore, PA but without having had the pleasure of seeing Anders Osborne live I couldn’t begin to imagine just how beautiful a mash-up this project would actually be until they laid it down for all the brothers and sisters there that evening. From the moment Luther Dickinson and Anders Osborne hit the stage together until almost 3 hours later these boys took the hands of everyone there that night to guide us through a musical journey filled with train rides, meeting places, swamps, Hurricane Katrina and more. N.M.O. played a combination of N.M.A and the Anders Osborne catalog with a healthy dose of new music coming from the North Mississippi Osborne album “Freedom & Dreams”.
1) “Away for Too Long”
2) “Back Together”
3) “Lonely Love”
4) “Dyin’ Days”

6) Brush Up Against You”

9) “Kings & Peasants”
10) “Many Wise Men”
11) “Junco Pardna”
This was a night that left everyone longing for their southern roots whether they were natural or adopted like Anders’ are. The Ardmore Music Hall became a Mississippi Hill Country juke joint melded with a typical hot, steamy night on Frenchman Street in New Orleans. You felt the presence of the old bluesmen who inspired and left marks on the boys in the band with a hint New Orleans funk & second lines. By the end of the night after dancing, swaying and feeling the blues in my soul I felt refreshed, revived and had a new outlook on life. After the show I said to Luther Dickinson that I felt like I had just worshiped at the church of the blues, he smiled, put his hand on my head and said without missing a beat as he pulled his hand away, “You’re healed girl, you’ve been healed”
